Mission Statement

The City of Brentwood Triad council is committed to improving the quality of life for the senior citizens of our community by enhancing their health, safety and security through communication, education and outreach.

Goals

Reduce crimes against the elderly and reduce the unwarranted fear of crime that seniors often experience.

Senior Facts & Why They Become Victims

About 31% of seniors (10.5 million) live alone. Persons 85 years and older are the fastest growing segment of seniors. Americans 65 years old and older are a fast growing demographic group. In 2011, the baby boom generation will begin to turn 65. By 2030, it is estimated that there will be 70.3 million seniors. This is equivalent to 1 in 5 Americans. Seniors will live longer. Eventual declines in cognitive and physical functions could make them more vulnerable to victimization.

Benefits of a Triad

Opens communication between public safety personnel, adult services and seniors
Allows seniors to voice their concerns about crime and safety
Provides an avenue for active senior volunteers to help others
Reduces senior isolation, a contributing factor to senior victimization
Strengthens the ties amongst community groups
Builds a sense of community
Expands law enforcement personnel capabilities within the community

Preparing for Disasters for People with Special Needs
Emergencies can happen at a moment's notice. Mobility problems and hearing, learning, or seeing disabilities can add complication. It is important to plan ahead so you are better prepared for any urgent situation. The booklet Preparing for Disaster for People with Disabilities and Other Special Needs gives tips on getting informed, making a plan, assembling a kit, and keeping your plans up to date. These tips provide people with disabilities and their caregivers with guidance in managing communications, equipment, pets, and home hazards.
